CANTON - The owner of the University Plaza, Route 11, said Tuesday he expects the new Dollar Tree store will open by May 1 while plans for a Save-A-Lot grocery store are also moving forward.
David C. Muraco, owner of Empire Property Management, Dewitt, said he has three weeks to provide Dollar Tree, Inc., with 8,600 square-foot space for its new store adjacent to Ye Ol Liquor Store on the plazas east side.
Mr. Muraco said hes hired crews to remove asbestos and remodel the interior, including installation of a drop ceiling. After Dollar Tree takes over the space, the company installs its own shelving.
We handle the mechanical work while they handle the fixtures, Mr. Muraco said.
Dollar Tree is a national chain with stores in Potsdam, Gouverneur, Massena and Ogdensburg.
All of the items in the Dollar Tree sell for $1 or less. Products include housewares, cleaning supplies, food, health and beauty, seasonal decorations, party supplies and more.
By Friday, Mr. Muraco said he expects to have a lease agreement signed with Jeffrey L. Proulx, a Canton businessman who plans to open a 16,000 square-foot Save-A-Lot. The grocery store would be adjacent to Dollar Tree, another discount retailer housed in the plaza. The space previously housed Canton Classy Collectibles, a flea market that closed Dec. 31 because Mr. Muraco wanted to market the space to a new tenant.
