OFA boys basketball sizzles past Voorheesville, 80-49

SARATOGA SPRINGS — The Ogdensburg Free Academy boys basketball team got an exceptional performance from Kinnon LaRose and rode his 30 points for a state Class B first-round victory on Tuesday.

LaRose finished with 30 points, going 12-for-20 from the field with seven assists, four rebounds and four steals to power the Blue Devils to a 80-49 win over Section 2’s Voorheesville at Saratoga High School.

OFA (22-1 overall) led 23-14 after the first and opened to a 40-23 lead at halftime against the Blackbirds (21-2).

Matt Piercey logged 18 points on 6-of-9 shooting, grabbed seven rebounds and dished out four assists, while Colin Ross chipped in 16 points on 6 of 11 shooting.

“I’m very happy with the way our team played tonight,” OFA coach Mark Henry said.

“The team responded very well to Voorheesville’s challenges. We jumped early and we able to force them out of their zone and when we did that, we attacked the basket well. Defensively, we did a good job against Logan Hotaling who is a very good player. Colin got us started early with seven first quarter points and Matt hit two big 3s in the first quarter and Kinnon just had a fantastic game.”

The Blue Devils finished 31-for-54 from the field, including 8-for-19 on 3-point baskets. The Blackbirds struggled, shooting 22-of-64 from the field, including 5-of-26 on 3-point shots.

Hotaling finished with 19 points for the Blackbirds.

OFA will face Section 7 champion Plattsburgh on Saturday at SUNY Plattsburgh at 1:45 p.m. for the right to play in the state final four in Glens Falls on March 14-16.

A rough first half cost the Lumberjacks (14-8) in a Class C first-round game against Section 7’s Seton Catholic at SUNY Potsdam.

Seton Catholic (17-3) outscored Tupper Lake 25-18 in the opening half and held off a late rally to earn the win.

Kaden Baugh scored 25 points to pace Seton Catholic. Chris Kustos scored 14 points and Keagen Briggs added 10.

Mitch Keniston led the Lumberjacks with a 22-point effort.
