Five deserving high school graduates who plan on entering the medical field this year will receive $1,000 scholarships from the Claxton-Hepburn Medical Center Auxiliary.
Three scholarships are available to students who are the children or grandchildren of hospital employees or auxiliary members, and two scholarships will be open to high school students in Ogdensburg Free Academy, Lisbon, Heuvelton, Morristown, Hammond or Madrid-Waddington central schools.
Auxiliary Liaison Ramona Kennedy said they are looking for well-rounded applicants who are interested in the medical field.
We dont just look at their grades, Mrs. Kennedy said.
Students who exemplify leadership skills, who are volunteers or who are otherwise invested in their community are encouraged to apply, Mrs. Kennedy said.
The scholarship application is one page and can be found at the guidance offices of the six participating schools or can be picked up from Mrs. Kennedys office by calling 393-1559.
This is a very easy scholarship to fill out, Mrs. Kennedy said.
As part of the application students will be given a chance to write about why they feel they are deserving of the scholarship.
We really read every single one that comes in, Mrs. Kennedy said of the letter of application.
Students will also need a letter of recommendation from a teacher, school administrator or guidance director along with a transcript.
Applications have to be in the mail by March 28 and sent to Ramona Kennedy, Claxton-Hepburn Medical Center Auxiliary, 214 King St., Ogdensburg, N.Y., 13669.
Scholarship winners will be invited to accept the award at the auxiliarys Annual Spring Dinner at 5 p.m. on May 8 at the Gran View Restaurant.
