The Immaculate Heart Central School basketball player who collapsed during a game Tuesday at Indian River Central School, Philadelphia, remained in critical condition Thursday night at Upstate Medical University, Syracuse.
But Junior/Senior High School Principal Lisa A. Parsons, who has been in contact with the students mother, said she was told that Jack Valentine, 13, was stabilizing and holding his own Thursday.
The youth collapsed for unknown reasons when he returned to the bench after playing the first quarter of a boys seventh-grade modified game Tuesday afternoon. He was resuscitated by Indian Rivers school nurse, Theresa M. Leeson, and athletic trainer Ashley N. Naklick, who performed CPR and used an automated external defibrillator, or AED, on the student.
He was taken to Samaritan Medical Center in Watertown for initial assessment and transferred to Upstate Medical on Tuesday evening.
Mrs. Parsons said the quick reaction by Indian River staff essentially saved his life.
