RECKLESS ENDANGERMENT - POTSDAM - St. Lawrence County Sheriff’s Department deputies charged two men following a fight early Saturday morning inside a residence in the town of Potsdam that resulted in one resident of the Route 56 home firing off one round from his rifle.

Deputies said they responded to a complaint of an assault at the Route 56 residence at 12:30 a.m. Saturday and charged Greogry H. Spring, 52, of 6764 state Route 56, Potsdam, with a felony count of first-degree reckless endangerment, third-degree assault and second-degree menacing.

They also charged Xaver P. Vanarsdale, 34, also of 6764 Route 56, Potsdam, with third-degree assault and second-degree criminal trespass.

Police said Vanarsdale entered Springs’s residence and refused to leave, leading to a physical altercation between the two men. Spring then grabbed a rifle, allegedly pointed the loaded firearm at Vanarsdale and then shot off a round close to his fellow combatant. Deputies said both men suffered injuries from the altercation.

Spring was arraigned by Potsdam Town Justice James Mason and released under the supervision of the probation department. Vanarsdale was also arraigned by Justice Mason and was released on his own recognizance.

Deputies said their investigation into the incident is continuing.
