SYRACUSE - The Franklin Academy girls basketball team dropped a 50-44 decision to Section 3 champion Jamesville-DeWitt in the opening round of the NYSPHSAA Class A playoffs on Friday at Onondaga Community College.
The Red Rams (20-2) overcame an 11-10 first-quarter deficit with a 17-8 second quarter run and converted on 22 of 26 free throw attempts in turning back the Lady Huskies (18-3).
The Red Rams now get the winner of the second game of the night at OCC between Averill Park (Section 2) and Peru (Section 7) on Saturday with at 7:30 p.m. back at OCC.
The Red Rams separated themselves with a 17-9 second quarter as J-D converted all eight of its free throw attempts in the eight-minute span and were 11-for-13 from the charity stripe in the final period where they outscored the Lady Huskies 18-16.
Carly OHern finished with 17 points with 10 coming from free throws in leading the winning offense. Meg Hair had 12 points, going 6-6 from the line, while Alyssa Robens finished with 12 points, five rebounds plus four blocks.
Erin McDonald netted nine of her team-high 11 points in the first half for FA which closed to within two at 30-28 midway through the third quarter before being held without a hoop for over four minutes to end the frame. Meghan OConnor added nine points followed by Morgan Fountain and Emily Marshall with seven apiece.
