Winter Cancer Treatment Center Marks 20th Year At CHMC

CANCER CENTER TURNS 20 - The Richard E. Winter Cancer Treatment Center at Claxton-Hepburn Medical Center marks its 20th year of operation this year. This week’s photo, taken from The Journal’s archives, shows the center shortly after it opened in 1994. The medical center, recognizing the high prevalence of cancers among residents of Ogdensburg and its surrounding communities, and with the help of funds from its namesake and others, opened the center to prevent the need for patients to seek treatment in bigger cities. This year will also bring a new linear accelerator that will provide more focused, targeted treatment for patients as part of a $4.2 million expansion at the facility. Medical center officials are shooting for the expansion to be finished in May, and spokeswoman Laura C. Shea said Friday that there will be combined 20th anniversary celebration, expansion unveiling and donor appreciation event sometime in June. In the last 20 years, the center has helped thousands of county residents. Mrs. Shea said its current patient files amount to about 4,000. “By opening the center back in 1994 we really did prevent the need for people to leave the area for cancer care,” she said. “We have on average about 150 patients in treatment – both medical and radiation oncology – at any given time throughout the year.” Congratulations to the treatment center and Claxton-Hepburn for reaching this milestone.
