College lacrosse: Syracuse topples St. John’s in Georgia

KENNESAW, Ga. — Kevin Rice posted his second eight-point game of the season, and the 11th-ranked Syracuse University men’s lacrosse team snapped a two-game losing streak with a 14-8 nonconference victory over No. 19 St. John’s on Saturday in the inaugural Cobb County Lacrosse Classic.

Senior goalie Dominic Lamolinara made 12 saves for the Orange (3-2), which allowed 33 goals in losses to No. 7 Maryland and No. 4 Virginia.

“He was seeing the ball really well,” said SU head coach John Desko, at the helm for his 250th career game.

“I thought he was a big reason why we had the lead going in at halftime. He made some very good saves for us,” Desko added.

SU started a 10-1 run midway through the first quarter to put the game out of reach and improve to 8-0 all-time against the Big Red (2-3). The Orange led 11-3 at halftime.

Rice scored a season-high four goals to go with four assists, and senior Derek Maltz returned to the starting lineup to score four goals.

Redshirt sophomore Dylan Donahue scored three goals on four shots for SU.

SU defenders Brandon Mullins and Matt Harris caused four turnovers apiece, each setting a career high.

The Orange defensive unit forced a season-high 13 turnovers and killed five of the Red Storm’s six man-up opportunities.

SU held the advantage in faceoffs (40-35) and groundballs (30-24).

The Orange’s next game is at noon Saturday against Johns Hopkins in Baltimore. The game will be televised on ESPNU.

The Cobb County Lacrosse Classic was organized by former SU All-American attacker Liam Banks.
