CANTON - Lewis and Jefferson counties had two of the three highest unemployment rates in the state in January, and St. Lawrence County wasnt far behind, according to statistics released Tuesday by the state Department of Labor.
Lewis County had the second highest rate at 10.2 percent, up from 8.9 percent in December; and Jefferson County was third highest at 10 percent, up from 9.1 percent the previous month. Bronx County had the highest rate at 11.2 percent.
St. Lawrence Countys jobless rate was 9.5 percent in January, up from 8.1 percent in December.
Nevertheless, jobless rates in the north country are down significantly from January 2013, when unemployment was 12.1 percent in Lewis County, 11.8 percent in Jefferson County and 11.4 percent in St. Lawrence County.
The January unemployment rate in upstate New Yorks 52-county region was 7.4, down from from 9.2 percent a year ago. The statewide rate fell from 9.1 to 7.3 percent during the same period, while the national rate fell from 8.5 to 7 percent.
