St. Lawrence Gas asks customers to be wary of calls demanding payment

MASSENA - Enbridge St. Lawrence Gas officials say customers are getting calls about their gas bills, but they’re not from the company.

Enbridge St. Lawrence Gas General Manager James P. Ward said customers have notified them that they are being contacted by phone and email, demanding payment or offering a discount for being a good paying customer. They may request the customer’s bank account information or credit or debit card numbers and ask them to agree to make an immediate payment.

Notices about the calls were included with the most recent billing statements mailed to customers.

“I believe we had about three or four people contact us. We thought it was a good idea to get the information out there,” Mr. Ward said.

He said that Enbridge St. Lawrence Gas does contact customers who have past due balance by phone to offer them payment options. However, they never demand payment over the phone. Also, state Public Service Commission rules and regulations do not permit them to offer discounts on their approved rates.

“Every once in a while we get calls from our customers questioning certain people calling them to sell them gas or other things. This one was a particular concern because they were asking for bank information and credit or debit information, which we never do over the phone. We never ask for any banking information over the phone. I think most of our customers realize that we don’t ask for that information,” Mr. Ward said.

“They should recognize our phone numbers (on Caller ID). We’re local,” he said.

He said if a customer has a delinquent payment they’ll receive a written notice first before the company calls them to make arrangements for payment.

“Way before we would ever call somebody, they would get some sort of notice explaining where they stand. That would be the first thing,” Mr. Ward said.

He suggested that anyone who receives a call asking for information call St. Lawrence Gas.

“I think the best thing, if somebody does call, is to call us and we can tell them, ‘Yes, this was us,’” he said.
