Old Forge bus route in Lewis County to continue this summer

LOWVILLE — The wheels on the bus will go ‘round and ‘round again this season, all the way to Old Forge.

Lewis County and Birnie Bus will offer bus routes from points in the county to Water Safari for the third summer, providing inexpensive transportation for employees or waterpark goers.

To assess this year’s needs, flyers, which also include information on applying for summer jobs in Old Forge, went out to local high school students.

“We’re hoping they respond early,” said Sara Freda, Lewis County mobility manager.

The data bus officials collect will help plan routes and expected occupancy.

This year, an additional stop in Croghan was added by request of potential riders. The success of that pick-up and drop-off location will be monitored to determine if the locations should remain part of the route.

In addition to Croghan, the bus will stop at locations in Lowville, Glenfield/BOCES, Lyons Falls, Port Leyden and Boonville.

After two weeks of the bus runs, a finalized bus route will be determined based on usage. Drop-off and pick-up locations are dependent on the number of riders using each site.

Last year, the routes averaged 30 riders each way, for a total of 60 riders per day.

“The vast majority of those were workers,” said Stacy L. Alvord, Lewis County Social Services Commissioner. Water Safari employs many teens in summer jobs that are not available in Lewis County.

Cost of transportation is $1 each way, or $2 round trip. Exact change is encouraged. Discounted monthly passes will be available through Birnie Bus.

Those considering using the bus this summer should contact Mrs. Freda at sfreda@lewiscountyny.org or 376-5919 before June 10.

For information on summer job opportunities in the Old Forge area, call the employment office at 376-5800.
