The National Weather Services latest winter storm warning takes effect for Jefferson, Lewis and St. Lawrence counties starting at 8 a.m. today until 8 a.m. Thursday.
Forecasters expect 10 to 17 inches of snow to accumulate in Lewis County, 9 to 17 inches in Jefferson and up to 12 inches in St. Lawrence County.
Northeast winds with gusts up 45 mph could cause near-whiteout conditions in Jefferson and Lewis counties, the weather service said.
In St. Lawrence County, wind gusts may reach up to 35 miles per hour, with snowfall rates of up to 1 inch per hour possible at times.
The weather service suggests drivers in the area keep an extra flashlight and water in their vehicles in case of an emergency if they must travel during the snow storm.
