POTSDAM — Clarkson University built a pair of three-goal leads before escaping with a 9-8 men’s lacrosse victory over SUNY Potsdam on Tuesday.

Cory Herrington led the Golden Knights (2-1) with three goals, while Matthew Gold and Ryan St. Croix chipped in with two goals each.

Sophomore midfielder Jon Woodworth of Carthage scored a career-high three goals and senior captain Rob Kunz, formerly of Immaculate Heart Central, had a game-high five points with a goal and four assists for Potsdam (2-1).

WOMEN’S LACROSSE

KEUKA 11, SUNY CANTON 9

Sophomore Megan Poupore of Massena scored three times, but a late comeback attempt by the Kangaroos fell just short at Keuka Park in their season-opener.

Robyn Carroll contributed two goals and one assist for Canton, while Lori Ardoin and Tressa Goolden each finished with a goal and two assists.

Maggie Bonafede led Keuka (1-1) with three goals and four assists.

UTICA 13, CLARKSON 11

Megan Kane supplied five goals and an assist for the Pioneers (3-1), who held off a second-half rally by the Golden Knights at Utica.

Clarkson, which trailed 11-4 at halftime, scored the first six goals of the second half in the nonconference game.

Christine Wright, formerly of Immaculate Heart Central, and Paige Fayette, a former Indian River athlete, each scored four goals and handed out two assists for Clarkson (1-2). Danielle Faivbus, Mollie Simmons and Rachel Kenyon also scored.

BASEBALL

SUNY CANTON 1-10, MCLA 0-7

Braden Giffin slugged a three-run home run in the seventh inning and also singled as the Kangaroos completed a doubleheader sweep of the Trailblazers in Winter Haven, Fla.

Jesse Barton tripled in a run to complete the four-run seventh and also singled for SUNY Canton (2-2). Brandon Welch also tripled for the Kangaroos.

In the first game, Zach Lawrence threw a five-hit shutout for the win, and Matt Hall singled in the winning run in the bottom of the eighth inning as SUNY Canton edged Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts (2-4).

SOFTBALL

SUNY CANTON SWEPT

The Kangaroos (0-6) dropped a pair of nonleague games, losing 3-0 to Eureka College and 3-2 to Principia, both in Myrtle Beach, S.C.
