MASSENA -A family of three is now without a home following a fire Tuesday on the South Raquette River Road.

Massena Volunteer Fire Department Chief Ted Krywancyzk said the department was initially called to the home at 442 County Route 37 at 7:42 p.m., checking back into service less than one hour later.

They were again called to the home at 9:58 p.m., remaining on the scene until 10:45 p.m.

“The rekindle was the big one,” Mr. Krywancyzk said, adding at that point the home was destroyed.

Mr. Krywancyzk said the family was not home at the time of the rekindle.

Mutual aid at that time was provided by the Louisville, Brasher-Winthrop and Helena volunteer fire departments. The Massena Rescue Squad also responded to the scene.

The blaze rekindled for a second time at approximately 3:15 p.m. Wednesday firefighters when were again called to the home, which was owned by Mandy and Derrick Planty. The couple resided there with a child and a dog.

Firefighters checked back into service at roughly 4:30 p.m.

Mr. Krywancyzk said Mr. Planty went to the home on Wednesday to see if he could collect some of the family’s belongings when he noticed smoke inside the house.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation, and Mr. Krywancyzk said the home was insured.

“The investigator is still investigating,” he said. “He has to interview the homeowners.”

Online sources say the four-bedroom home with approximately 1,700 square feet was built in 1986.
