CARTHAGE — The Elks and Carthage Area Chamber of Commerce are seeking applications for the 2013 Citizen of the Year.

“There are many people in the community who do selfless acts and who deserve recognition even though they are the ones who say they don’t,” Chamber President Teri L. Ellis said.

Since 1981, with the exception of two years, outstanding citizens have been honored.

A panel of seven anonymous citizens from the twin villages chooses the honoree from among those nominated.

The award is made on the basis of citizenship or “contribution in the civic or social welfare activity,” according to the entry form. Entries are judged on five components: citizenship, achievement, leadership, dedication and motivation.

The award is given to those who act in a volunteer capacity “with dedication and a motivation to contribute without any thought of receiving an award. Thus nomination for individuals in a paid capacity will not be considered.” There are no posthumous awards and the decisions of the judges is final.

“The citizen of the year award is a way for the Carthage Elks to recognize someone who has contributed their time and energy to make Carthage a better place,” incoming Elks exalted ruler Paul Renaud said. “Looking at the names of all the past award recipients on the plaque in the Lodge, I can’t help but think of all the hours that those people gave back to our community.”

Applications can be picked up at the chamber office, 120 S. Mechanic St.; Carthage Elks Lodge, 412 Fulton St.; Carthage Savings & Loan, 313 State St., or Community Bank, 84 Bridge St., West Carthage.

Applications should be returned by March 24. The dinner, consisting of turkey or fish by request, will be held at 6 p.m. April 23 at the Elks Lodge. Tickets must be purchased before the event from the Elks Lodge or chamber office at a cost of $17.
