Jefferson County DWI crackdown will coincide with St. Patrick’s Day

Police agencies in Jefferson County will participate in a crackdown on impaired driving that coincides with St. Patrick’s Day weekend.

The enforcement effort, which runs from Friday to Tuesday, is part of a statewide STOP-DWI program designed to reduce the number of injuries and death resulting from impaired driving.

Jefferson County STOP-DWI will be working with the county’s Sheriff Department, state police, state park police and the Watertown Police Department in attempts to protect motorists over the weekend, which is historically a deadly period for impaired driving.

“There will be no warnings,” Rick C. Barrisford, the county’s STOP-DWI coordinator, said in a statement. “Our message is simple: Don’t drive impaired by alcohol or drugs.”

The funding for the crackdown was provided by the state STOP-DWI Foundation through a grant from the governor’s office’s Traffic Safety Committee via the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
