Winter blues turn green

The first major sign that spring is around the corner is upon us.

North Country Goes Green, the annual Irish festival scheduled around St. Patrick’s Day, will be held Friday through Sunday at the Dulles State Office Building in downtown Watertown. This celebration not only commemorates Ireland’s patron saint but is a benchmark to the (near) end of winter.

The event will feature Irish musical entertainment and stepdancing, a Miss Ireland Pageant, a soda bread contest, a parade and plenty of food. If visitors invoke the luck of the Irish, perhaps they’ll also be able to scrape up a beer or two while there.

North Country Goes Green is always a good time to shake off the winter blues and celebrate the approach of warmer weather. Spring will officially begin next week on March 20, meaning the snow can’t last too much longer.

This winter has been particularly harsh in Northern New York. The year began with a rare ice storm, followed by numerous periods of frigid temperatures and snow.

Lots and lots of snow!

How much? According to the Watertown Filtration Plant, we’ve been hit with more than 177 inches of snow so far in 2014. But let’s forget inches for a moment and convert this amount into a more identifiable measurement.

Our annual snowfall this year of 177 inches equals 14.75 feet. As displayed in the accompanying graphic, that’s as high as a Volkswagen bus if you stand the vehicle on its end.

No wonder we’re all so tired of this winter! The only question left is this: How many shamrocks would that be? We’ll crunch the numbers and get back to you on that one … just as soon as it stops snowing.
