Colgate holds off St. Lawrence in Game 1, 2-1

HAMILTON — Colgate University scored two power-play goals in the first six minutes of the game and went on to hold off St. Lawrence University, 2-1 to win Game 1 of an ECAC Hockey quarterfinal playoff series on Friday night at Starr Rink.

Tyson Spink scored a man-advantage goal 2:29 into the game for the 17th-ranked and second-seeded Raiders (18-12-5) and then set up Kevin Lough’s power-play tally at 5:09.

Goalie Charlie Finn made 23 saves for Colgate, which can close out the best-of-3 series with a victory at 7 tonight.

Justin Baker scored a goal at 14:20 of the third period for the eighth-seeded Saints (15-18-4).

Goalie Matt Weninger stopped 29 of 31 shots for St. Lawrence.

While Colgate went 2-for-3 on its man advantages, the Raiders also blanked St. Lawrence’s nation-leading power play, but the Saints were limited to only two opportunities.

St. Lawrence, which swept Colgate in the first round of the playoffs last year, needs a victory tonight to avoid being swept in the quarterfinals for the second straight year.

The Raiders are looking to reach the ECAC Hockey final four for the third time in four years.
