POTSDAM - Village police are reminding area residents to be aware of a scam that calls for people to cash a check and then part of the proceeds to an unknown party.
They said a female entered their station Thursday afternoon to report she has fallen prey to the scam.
Police said the woman thought she had been hired to be a nanny by a couple that would be arriving shortly from overseas.
A check was sent to her to buy supplies, and the extra money was to be sent back to the couple. Police said the check turned out to be fraudulent.
Police said if unknown people are sending money in the form of a check and asking for money from the check to be sent back then it is a scam.
