Students may soon receive academic credits for working on Potsdam yearbook

POTSDAM - Students at Potsdam High School may soon be able to receive academic credit for working on the high school yearbook, thanks to a proposal from Yearbook Advisor Tammara Madeja.

High school Principal Joann Chambers said so fair between 12 and 14 students have expressed interest in the class, but she’s expecting to see that number grow even higher as students begin completing their schedules and finding that they have space available.

Ms. Chambers said the half-credit class would be every other day for the full year. “It fits in nicely opposite P.E. (physical education) or science lab,” she said.

Ms. Chambers said the idea of creating a class came because many of the students involved with the yearbook simply didn’t have the time to commit to it outside of school, leaving much of the work up to Ms. Madeja.

Students, who don’t have room in their schedule for the class could still be involved with the yearbook, as Ms. Chambers said it would still require some work after school.

Given that much of the work would be done during the school day, Ms. Chambers said that Ms. Madeja is only requesting half of the contracted stipend.

Mr. Brady said he would likely have to speak with the teachers’ association about that.

“We would probably have to speak to them (teachers association), because she is requesting a cut in her own pay for which there is a set amount in the contract.”
