ELLISBURG — An Adams man was arrested Wednesday afternoon after he was found to be intoxicated when he collided with a guardrail and then left the scene and entered a nearby residence, state police said.

Michael R. Smith, 43, of 13487 Route 178, was charged with driving while intoxicated, failure to stop at a stop sign, unsafe lane change and leaving the scene of a property damage accident.

Troopers said that the Ellisburg Fire Department arrived on the scene first, about 2:30 p.m., but by the time state police arrived, Mr. Smith had left. He was found later at the residence of Robert M. Johnson, 8991 Route 178, Henderson. Police said the two men knew each other, but their relationship was unclear.

Mr. Smith’s blood alcohol content was 0.16 percent, police said. A BAC of 0.08 percent or more constitutes proof of intoxication under state law.

He was arrested at 3:45 p.m. and is to appear in Town Court to answer the charges.
