Massena man jailed following domestic dispute

MENACING - MASSENA - A Massena man was jailed Monday night after being charged with threatening his then girlfriend with a kitchen knife during an argument Saturday night.

Village police charged Patrick J. Barber, 25, of 2 Richards St., Massena, with second-degree harassment, fourth-degree criminal mischief and second-degree menacing.

He was arraigned by Massena Village Justice Eric J. Gustafson and sent to the St. Lawrence County Correctional Facility with bail set at $750 cash or bond. The village justice also signed a temporary order of protection directing Barber to stay away from Jocelyn Spinner.

Barber, who had allegedly been drinking all day with a friend, reportedly became irate with his then girlfriend of approximately three weeks during an incident that took place at approximately 8 p.m. Saturday.

He reportedly grabbed Ms. Spinner by the arms and right side, leaving bruises; pressed a kitchen knife against her right wrist and told her he would cut her if she tried to move and bit her on the neck during the argument.

Ms. Spinner allegedly attempted to use her cell phone to contact police during the incident, but Barber reportedly grabbed the phone out of her hands and threw it.

She said fearing for her own safety if she attempted to leave the residence she slept on the floor at Barber’s residence Saturday night before informing her then boyfriend Sunday morning their relationship was over and walking away from the residence. She said she was initially hesitant about reporting the incident to police due to concerns about her personal safety.
