St. Lawrence County expanding use of collection agency

CANTON — The St. Lawrence County Board of Legislators is considering expanding its use of Falcon Recovery Systems for collections.

For the past several years, Public Health, Community Services and Probation have used Falcon to try to collect on errant accounts. The county is looking to consolidate collection work under one contract with Falcon.

Falcon has charged 15 percent for accounts that are up to 60 days in arrears and up to 41 percent on older delinquent accounts. The expanded contract could include a reduction in the percentage charged for fresh accounts, county attorney Michael C. Crowe said.

“They don’t get paid unless they collect,” he said.

The company would be reimbursed for any court filing fees it paid regardless of whether it collected on the debt, he said. However, those filings are expected to be few in number.
