Oleta L. Roca


A Funeral Mass for Oleta L. Roca, age 92 of Ogdensburg will be held 11:00am on Thursday (March 20, 2014) at Notre Dame Church with Rev. F. James Shurtleff officiating. Burial will be in the spring at Notre Dame Cemtery.

Calling hours will be held on Wednesday from 3:00-7:00pm at the Fox & Murray Funeral Home. Mrs. Roca passed away at her home on Thursday (March 13, 2014) surrounded by her family.

Surviving are her children JoAnne Roca of Ogdensburg, Mary Sue Lowery & her husband John of Rodman; a brother Lawrence Sovay & his wife Beatrice of Ft. Covington; a sister-in-law Ruth Roca of Rensselaer Falls; grandchildren Andrew Lowery & his wife Stephanie of Watertown, Amanda Andrews & her husband Philip of New Ipswich, NH; great-grandchildren Ethan Lowery and Mary Jo & Eleanor Andrews; a niece Peggy Marcoux of Hyde Park, VT; a nephew Rod Roca & his wife Donna of Ogdensburg along with several cousins.

Oleta was born in Lawrence NY a daughter of the late Lawrence & Lillian (Tuper) Sovay. She graduated from St. Regis High School and continued her education at the A. Barton Hepburn School of Nursing to receive a Registered Nursing Degree. She then entered the US Army in 1945 and held rank of 1st Lieutenant with the 9th Field Hospital Unit until 1946 when she received her honorable discharge. On April 30, 1949 she married Lyle R. Roca at St. Ann Rectory in St. Regis Falls. He predeceased her on June 1, 1980.

During her career, she was employed at Cedars Nursing Home and as a private duty nurse until she retired in the late 70’s. She was a Girl Scout leader and active member of the Notre Dame Parish where she also taught religious instruction for many years.

She enjoyed reading, knitting, embroidery, traveling and spending time with her grandchildren. Memorial contributions can be made to the Notre Dame Heritage Fund or Hospice and Palliative Care of St. Lawrence Valley. Condolences can also be shared online at
