The New York State Zoo at Thompson Park announced the birth of two river otters on Feb. 16.

The male and female pups were born to 4-year-old resident otter Annie and fathered by 8-year-old Otis.

The zoo said veterinary checks indicate the pups are healthy and developing normally, and said Annie is an “ attentive yet relaxed” first-time mother.

Annie and her pups will remain out of public view until they are able to swim adequately and navigate their habitat.

The zoo said otter pups are typically born between late winter and early spring and their eyes remain closed until about four weeks of age.

Pups do not initially know how to swim, and must be taught by their mother as they grow and start to explore their surroundings, the zoo said.
