Clarkson women’s hockey team advances to NCAA championship

HAMDEN, Conn. — The Clarkson University women’s hockey team is headed to the national championship game after a 5-1 victory over Mercyhurst in a Frozen Four semifinal Friday night at the High Point Solutions Arena.

Clarkson (30-5-5) will meet two-time defending national champion Minnesota (38-1-1), which defeated Wisconsin 5-3 in the first semifinal. It will be the first appearance by any Clarkson hockey team in a national title game since the men’s team lost to Cornell in 1970.

Mercyhurst (24-9-4) scored the first goal of the game on a shot from Jaclyn Arbour at 8 minutes, 2 seconds of the first period. Clarkson answered with a three-goal second period on shots from Renata Fast, Vanessa Gagnon and Christine Lambert. Brittany Styner and Shannon MacAulay scored goals in the third period for Clarkson.
