Police accuse DWI suspect of striking hydrant, light pole

A city man was charged with aggravated driving while intoxicated and driving at an unreasonable speed after city police said he was intoxicated when he struck a fire hydrant and a light pole Sunday night.

Johnathan R. Beebe, 35, of 137 Park Ave., was accused of accelerating at high speed on the 100 block of William Street at 11:33 p.m. Sunday. Officers observed him lose control of the vehicle near the intersection of William and Boyd streets. He applied the brakes, but lost control of the vehicle, causing it to swerve into the oncoming lane of traffic before hitting a fire hydrant on the side of the road, police said. He then struck an ornamental light pole, they said.

The fire hydrant was found approximately 25 feet from the point of impact and the light pole was knocked off its base and lying on its side on the roadway, according to police.

Police said Mr. Beebe admitted to being drunk, but his blood alcohol content was not available.

He was processed at the Metro-Jefferson Public Safety Building and released on appearance tickets for City Court.
