Ogdensburg Boys and Girls Club board members report another successful Expo

Large crowds made for another successful Boys and Girls Club Expo, organizers said Monday.

“This was one of our better ones yet,” Ogdensburg Boys and Girls Club Board President John M. Pinkerton said. “Last year was our best year, and we either met or were just behind that, which is great considering all the construction and the snow barriers. All things considered, it was a very good weekend. We all appreciate the fact that the community came out and supported us once again.”

Over 1,000 people attended each day, Ogdensburg Boys and Girls Club Assistant Director Megan McNamara said.

“Attendance was very good,” Ms. McNamara said. “But we wouldn’t be able to do it without the 400 plus volunteers that came out and the support of the community.”

Volunteers collected over $40,000 through its raffle ticket sales this year, head ticket salesman and OBGC board member Andy Manke said. The money will go directly toward funding afterschool programs for children.

“That’s what we needed to get,” Mr. Manke said. “We were pretty much on target.”’

Several booths reported record turnouts, including Ogdensburg Lions Club, which offered free eye screenings all weekend.

Ogdensburg Lions Club member and optician Leon C. Montroy and Lions Club member Douglas K. Duprey said over 155 children stopped by the Lions Club booth to have their eyes checked out for nearsightedness, farsightedness, lazy eye and astigmatism.

“It was very good for us to get out there and see people we wouldn’t normally see,” Mr. Duprey said. “One person who came by Friday said that since they had their eyes checked out, they had their vision corrected and were very happy. And he brought other kids with him this year. It makes a big difference in a child’s life.”

Several winners took home big prizes during the Ogdensburg Boys’ and Girls’ Club Annual Raffle Drawing Sunday.

First prize of $5,000, courtesy of Blevins Auto Group, went to Robert J. Marceau.

“Me and my family have been buying raffle tickets since it started over 38 years ago,” he said. “It’s very important for the kids in the Ogdensburg. They have all kinds of games and activities out there. We regularly attend the Club for our grandkids’ birthday parties.”

Though he has been buying tickets for a number of years, this is the first time Mr. Macreau has won a prize.

“I was sitting and watching John Candy in The Great Outdoors with my grandson when I got the call,” he said. “I didn’t believe them. I said this must be some kind of joke. Then they asked me to come down and pick up the check, and I went right over.”

Mr. Marceau said he would use the money to pay off bills and buy some new fishing equipment for his favorite pastime.

Second and third prize, a $1,500 gift certificates from Gardner’s’ Flooring & Furniture, went to John Patterson.

Fourth prize, a family membership from Northern Physical Therapy, went to Brett Heaton.

Fifth prize, a $1,000 gift certificate to from Carbino’s Jewelers, went to Brent Brenno.

Sixth prize, a Technical Entertainment Package from NBT Bank, went to Don Clark.

Seventh prize, a $1,000 Save-A-Lot Gift Certificate sponsored by ST. Lawrence Federal Credit Union, went to Mike O’Grady.
