For those of us who live and work or simply visit the Thousand Islands region and recognize its beauty and uniqueness, we applaud the effort by the many river towns in Jefferson and St. Lawrence counties to designate the Thousand Islands region as a Scenic Area of Statewide Significance. Hammond is to be applauded for procuring the initial funding necessary for this project.

Living in an area that has such unparalleled and world-class scenic beauty puts a responsibility on all of us to protect that beauty and environmental integrity. Not only is it the morally and ethically responsible thing to do, but in terms of economic development it allows us to continue to showcase and to capitalize on the original treasures this area has to offer.

Not unlike the Adirondack Mountains, the Thousand Islands region needs to capitalize again, as it did more than 120 years ago, on its uniqueness and grandeur. This is a wonderful first step for the region.
