CANTON – Need to weave your seat? Then plan on attending the Splint Seat Workshop at the St. Lawrence County Historical Association at the Silas Wright House, 3 East Main St., Canton, from 7-9 p.m. on two consecutive Wednesdays - April 2 and 9.
Learn how to give that old chair new life with a new bottom. Preregistration for the Splint Seat Workshop is required.
Carl Stickney, instructor for the Splint Seat Workshop, has decades of experience in replacing splint-woven seats and is happy to share his knowledge and enthusiasm for this art. Stickney is a member of the Board of Trustees of the St. Lawrence County Historical Association and the Stockholm Town Historian.
Participants in the workshop should bring a chair with the old seat removed. The workshop fee is $43 for historical association members and $53 for nonmembers. Class size is limited, so early registration is strongly encouraged. The splint material for an average size chair is included in the cost of the workshop; additional supplies to bring from home are: scissors, an awl, a paring knife, a few clothespins, a rag, and a small water container.
