POTSDAM - The St. Lawrence Central varsity boys lacrosse team survived an impressive second quarter by Potsdam Central to open the 2014 NAC season with a 7-5 win at the SUNY Potsdam turf field on a crisp Tuesday evening.

“We had a real big second quarter but we came out flat in the second half and just couldn’t get things going again,” said Sandstoner coach Kevin Talcott after the Sandstoners erased a 2-0 defict at the end of the opening frame by scoring five unanswered goals before halftime.

“This was pretty much the first time we’d gotten outside. We’re a very young team and this wasn’t too bad for our first game,” he added. “I see us being veryu competitive by the end of the season.”

The duo of Lukas Arquiett and Marshall Burninghausen anchored the winning offense for the Larries with three goals apiece. Jake Sutton chipped in a goal and assist while Brody Simonds accounted for the other goal.

Freshman Corson Green paced the Sandstoners with a pair of goals. Junior Richie Foster added a singleton along with sophomores David Caamano and Max Warden while freshman Billy Bergan logged a solo assist.

Junior Kody Kocsis worked the SLC crease for 17 saves while junior Chase Palmer turned aside 16 shots backstopping the Potsdam effort.

The Larries are slated to return to action on Monday at home against Saranac Lake starting at 4:30 p.m. while the Sandstoners play host to Massena Central at the SUNY Potsdam turf on Thursday at 6 p.m.

Underclassmen far outnumber seniors on this year’s Potsdam roster. The senior core consists of defenders Matt Liscum, Dylan Greer, and David Murray along with midfielders Matt Sutliff and Nick Vaccaro.

Defender Zach Rottier and back-up netminder Damien Trimm round out the junior class. Middies Dylan Gruneisen and Jacob Crary and attackman Sam Woods are expected to contribute as sophomores. A promising freshmen nucleus consists of Bank Soikum (M), Cole Varney (M), Noah Thomas (M), Keenan O’Gorman (A), Josh Sanchez (M) and John Burkum (M).
