Amish expert set to speak in Lowville

LOWVILLE — A noted Amish expert will speak on the subject here in mid-April.

SUNY Potsdam anthropology professor Karen M. Johnson-Weiner will give a presentation at 2 p.m. April 13 at the Lowville Mennonite Church on Ridge Road.

“I hope it will be an informative program for people who want to know more about the Amish, because they live among us,” said Bernadine Schwartzentruber, president of the Adirondack Mennonite Heritage Association.

The Mennonite association and the Lewis County Historical Society are co-sponsors of the event.

Part of the presentation will focus on the wide variations among Amish people, based largely on how conservative or progressive they are in accepting modern conveniences.

Wax on snow, a maple syrup candy, will be served after Ms. Johnson-Weiner’s presentation, and will be followed by the annual meeting of the Adirondack Mennonite Heritage Association.
