Martha Marie Kyle Prentice passed away Wednesday, March 26th, 2014 at her home in Nashville, TN.

Martha was born on June 16th, 1917 in Wayland, NY, the daughter of Reed Kyle and Sadie Chilson Kyle. She was valedictorian of her high school class and graduated from Alfred University in 1938. Fresh out of college, she took a job as a school teacher in Gainesville, NY where she met her future husband John C. Prentice.

The couple married in 1941. After WWII, they moved to Watertown and Mr. Prentice took a job as VP Sales for Moore Northern Haulers. The couple initially resided at Madison Barracks. Mr. Prentice eventually bought the company, renaming it Northern Haulers, and ran it successfully until it’s sale and his retirement in 1972. Martha served as VP Accounting and President of Watertown Leasing for many of those years.

The couple also founded and initially ran, along with Julius Samann, The Car Freshner Corporation. They were members of the Black River Valley Club, Ives Hill Country Club, and Trinity Episcopal Church.

The Prentices retired to Phoenix, AZ but continued to own property on Lake Ontario and spent summers in the Watertown area until Mr. Prentice’s death in 1991. Martha continued to make annual trips to the area for many years, always considered Watertown to be her home town and regaled her many friends with tales of Upstate NY.

Mrs. Prentice is survived by her daughter Sallie, and her husband David Schmidt, a Granddaughter, Kathleen McGivney and her husband Atom Moore, and a Great Granddaughter, Ariel Sobel , and by her son, Mark, her daughter in law, Michelle Nicolo Prentice, and three grandchildren, Gabrielle Caldwell and her husband Tony Caldwell, Matthew Bubel, and John Prentice.
