Potsdam Amvets prepping for April 5 grand opening event

POTSDAM - After three years of scurrying from building to building in the Potsdam area, the Robert J. Freego Amvets Post 262 now has a permanent home.

Members of the veteran’s organization will be hosting a grand opening event from noon until 5 p.m. on April 5 at their new location, 6771 U.S. Highway 11, Potsdam.

Mr. Freego was a World War II veteran from the neighboring town of Canton.

“It’s our first Amvets in Potsdam. We’ve been in Potsdam for three years now but we’ve been borrowing buildings. Now we’ve got our own building. We’ve been chartered since Jan. 26, 2011,” Second Assistant Commander Fay Sheldon said. “We’re going to have a ribbon cutting ceremony and then snack food from noon until 5 p.m. with prizes given out during the day.”

One of the top prizes being offered at the event will be a barbecue grill donated by Sears.

The soon to be Amvets post used to be the location of the “It-L-Do” furniture store, a business that sold used furniture. Members of the Amvets began remodeling on Sept. 1 and officially earned a license to open on Jan. 24.

“We started in here late last summer and talked with the owner. The building is at a good spot for us. The members have all been doing a ton of work renovating and everything. We got a license to open at the end of January but wanted to wait until the weather turned better,” Post Commander Floyd Field said.

“We have a good core membership here, and I am extremely proud of their dedication to this post. We want to emphasize that the Amvets is open to all veterans and we are open to helping in any way that we can.”

Mr. Field added that the widow of Mr. Freego, Pauline, will be in attendance next weekend along with members of her family.

Mr. Sheldon and Mr. Field are anticipating a good showing for the festivities.

“We’re hoping that all of the north country veterans will come visit,” Mr. Sheldon said.

“Hopefully it will be good weather so we can welcome everybody in and have them all see our post,” Mr. Field said.
