POTSDAM - After three years of scurrying from building to building, the Robert J. Freego Amvets Post 262 has a permanent home.

Members of the veterans organization will be hosting a grand opening event from noon to 5 p.m. on April 5 at their new location, 6771 Route 11.

Mr. Freego was a World War II veteran from the neighboring town of Canton.

“It’s our first Amvets in Potsdam. We’ve been in Potsdam for three years now, but we’ve been borrowing buildings,” Second Assistant Commander Fay Shelton said. “Now we’ve got our own building. We’ve been chartered since Jan. 26, 2011.”

Mr. Sheldon said the event will entail a ribbon cutting ceremony and refreshments, with prizes awarded to attendees throughout the day, including a barbecue grill donated by Sears.

The Amvets’ building used to be the location of the “It-L-Do” furniture store, a business that sold used furniture. Members of the post began remodeling on Sept. 1 and officially earned a license to open on Jan. 24.

“We started in here late last summer and talked with the owner. The building is at a good spot for us. The members have all been doing a ton of work renovating and everything. We got a license to open at the end of January but wanted to wait until the weather turned better,” Post Commander Floyd Field said. “We have a good core membership here, and I am extremely proud of their dedication to this post. We want to emphasize that the Amvets is open to all veterans and we are open to helping in any way that we can.”

Mr. Field said Mr. Freego’s widow, Pauline, and family members will attend.

Both Mr. Sheldon and Mr. Field are anticipating a good showing for the festivities.

“We’re hoping that all of the north country veterans will come visit,” Mr. Sheldon said.

“Hopefully it will be good weather so we can welcome everybody in and have them all see our post,” Mr. Field said.
