CARTHAGE The Carthage Industrial Development Corp. is seeking flexibility on a completion deadline to take advantage of funding to renovate a downtown property.
In February 2013, the CIDC was awarded a $200,000 grant through the Rural Area Revitalization Project program. A committee of CIDC members formed to administer the funds decided to use the funding to renovate 253-255 State St., the last building in the 200 block in need of upgrade. TLC Real Estate is at 255 State St., and Jims Pub was next door.
More than a year after funding was approved, Lori Nettles, owner of TLC Real Estate, has put together a plan to purchase the other half of the building to proceed with the renovation.
But the deadline for completion under the grant guidelines is December. We want to know that we have room to work if there are delays, said John F. McHugh, village community development director.
The main focus is to replace the roof and shore up the rear wall, including new windows and doors and repairing the porches. Mr. McHugh said there are also plans to renovate four second-story apartments accessed from a shared stairwell. The former pub would get heating, ventilation, plumbing and electrical upgrades to prepare it for a commercial tenant.
