Tri-Town Packing in Brasher explores equipment improvements

BRASHER FALLS — Tri-Town Packing is considering equipment changes to expand its product line and improve services for customers.

“Essentially, we’re looking for some upgrades to equipment to make things better for us and also for our customers,” said Jeffrey A. Liberty, one of the owners.

The St. Lawrence County Industrial Development Agency on Thursday approved an application on behalf of Tri-Town — a U.S. Department of Agriculture-certified meat processor — to the USDA Rural Business Enterprises grant program for $11,700 for a feasibility study.

The funding would enable Tri-Town to develop a business plan to determine if the equipment it is considering makes good business sense.

The company is considering packaging equipment to improve the appearance of its products and other processing equipment.

That could include a vacuum tumbler that would automatically mix together ingredients for its jerky, which now is done by hand. The equipment could allow for the expansion of Tri-Town’s jerky line.

Another piece of equipment under consideration is an automated bacon slicer. Tri-Town now slices bacon by hand.

“It looks nice, but it’s not as competitive as it could be for our customers,” Mr. Liberty said.
