Parishville accepts $48,000 bid for town barn cleanup

PARISHVILLE — Demolition of the town’s former highway department barn on Route 72 comes with a $48,000 price tag after town officials accepted a bid for the work recently.

The Town Council accepted the low bid submitted by Independent Commercial Contractors Inc., Lorraine. The payment includes a $20,000 base bid for the removal of friable asbestos and $28,000 for the demolition and disposal of the building.

Seven contractors bid on the project. Town engineer John Carr said the bids ranged from $48,000 to $169,000.

In late February, town officials condemned the structure and put the demolition out to bid after discussion with Mr. Carr. The engineer works for Blue Mountain Engineering, Bangor.

Mr. Carr said the board would have until May 2 to award the contract, but saw no red flags with the low bidder.

“I’ve gone back through their bid a couple of times and questioned them a little more thoroughly ... regarding some of the details of how they would go about it and they satisfied me,” Mr. Carr told town board members this week.

Mr. Carr said the town requires the work to be completed within 60 days, but the contractor said it likely could finish the project in less than 30 days.

Town Supervisor Rodney G. Votra said the town would be getting a good deal in accepting Mr. Carr’s recommendation.

Mr. Carr said that since the town owns the building, it will be required to provide an independent air monitor for the work. Four firms submitted proposals for the work, he said.

Mr. Votra advanced a motion to use Atlantic Testing, Canton, for the work, which drew unanimous support from the board. The company estimated the cost at slightly less than $7,000.
