Public vote Tuesday on fate of Lyons Falls sewer expansion

LYONS FALLS — Taxpayers in the village will decide the fate of a proposed sewer improvement project that would extend sewer service to more users with an estimated $250 increase yearly to residents.

“This is going to be a very difficult decision for our voters, especially after a long, cold winter with high fuel and electrical bills, and face a sewer service increase,” Mayor Catherine L. Liendecker said.

Voting yes would authorize the issuance of serial bonds in an amount not to exceed $3.95 million to be used for improvements to the wastewater treatment facility, expanding the collection system in the village to provide services to village residents not currently served.

The village has applied for interest-free hardship financing through the state’s Environmental Facilities Corporation.

“What it boils down to is do we vote no or yes to improve and expand our sewer system so 47 non-users can connect and so that our system can support the redevelopment of the old paper mill site,” Mrs. Liendecker said.

Voting will take place at the Fire Department Community Room, 3907 High St., from noon until 9 p.m.

All residents of the village who are registered voters and/or property owners who are listed on the property deeds are eligible to vote. Even if named on both lists, a person is entitled to only one vote. Businesses within the village will be allowed a single vote, as long as the business owner has proof he or she represents the company. If a business owner is also a registered voter and property owner in the village, that person may still cast only a single vote.

A public informational meeting was held Wednesday to answer questions concerning the project. Nearly 40 residents attended. The minutes of the meeting can be seen at http://wdt.me/YWSyKU.
