GREAT BEND Thanks to a side door that was left open, all of the cows and pigs inside a Watkins Road barn escaped from a fire that destroyed the structure Monday night.
Theyre all watching it from the field, said Michael A. Leggero, whose family raises its own meat at the 32890 Watkins Road property.
Nine fire departments and an ambulance squad responded to the scene at 8:31 p.m. Firetrucks and tankers lined nearby County Route 47 for nearly half a mile.
Mr. Leggero said he and his family were out at the time and saw the fire when they came home.
Farm equipment, woodworking supplies and guns and ammunition also were inside the barn.
The extent of the damage was not yet known late Monday.
Fire officials had yet to determine a cause of the fire. Mr. Leggero said, I have no idea what could have caused it.
The barn was insured and no one was injured.
Firefighters from Great Bend, Deferiet, Evans Mills, Felts Mills, West Carthage, Black River, Champion, Rutland and Natural Bridge, as well as the Carthage Area Rescue Squad, responded to the scene.
