Police: Clayton man intended to manufacture meth

WATERTOWN — City police said a Clayton man was discovered Monday night with laboratory equipment and chemicals used to manufacture methamphetamine.

Earl C. Towne II, 32, of 32843 Macomb Settlement Road, was arrested at 10:29 p.m. Monday near the intersection of Washington Street and Thompson Boulevard.

Mr. Towne was found with equipment, including a gas generator, a funnel and a two-liter bottle, police said.

He also allegedly was in possession of an Energizer lithium battery, which works as a catalyst; Rooto-brand drain cleaner, a source of sodium hydroxide, or lye; an instant ice compress containing anhydrous ammonia and Coleman lantern fuel, a solvent.

He was in possession of all of the items with the intent to manufacture methamphetamine at the location, police said.

He was charged with third-degree unlawful manufacture of methamphetamine, a class D felony. He was arraigned in City Court and sent to the Metro-Jefferson Public Safety Building on $5,000 cash bail.
