NEW BREMEN Two Croghan men were hospitalized after a van and a tractor crashed Monday morning on Route 812.
Jerry Zehr, 23, was driving a 2013 Kubota farm tractor south on the shoulder of the road at 9:44 a.m. when he attempted to make a left turn onto Mattis Road, deputies said. Mr. Zehr did not see a van in the southbound lane driven by 69-year-old Leland Knight and the two collided, according to deputies.
The van struck the left side of the tractor, causing substantial damage to both vehicles and trapping Mr. Knight inside the van, deputies said.
The New Bremen Volunteer Fire Department responded to the scene and freed Mr. Knight from the vehicle. He complained of pain in his ribs and was taken by Croghan ambulance to Lewis County General Hospital, Lowville, for treatment. Mr. Zehr suffered lacerations to his head and was treated at the scene before being taken to the hospital.
Mr. Zehr was issued a ticket for unsafe lane change.
In addition to the town fire department, sheriffs deputies were assisted by Lewis County EMS, Croghan ambulance and the Town of New Bremen Department of Transportation.
