POTSDAM — Opera’s most beloved romance will take to stage and screen on Saturday as the Met: Live in HD presents Giacomo Puccini’s “La Bohème.”

Puccini’s moving story of young love is the most performed opera in Metropolitan Opera history. An exciting young cast will take the stage in Franco Zeffirelli’s classic breathtaking production — which features a cast of hundreds, an onstage snow scene and a detailed reconstruction of the Latin Quarter in Paris.

Romanian soprano Anita Hartig makes her highly anticipated Met debut as the frail Mimì, and Italian star tenor Vittorio Grigolo plays her passionate lover, Rodolfo. American mezzo-soprano Susanna Phillips sings the flirtatious role of Musetta, while Massimo Cavalletti portrays the painter Marcello in the performance.

Puccini’s “La Bohème” will screen live from the Metropolitan Opera stage at 12:55 p.m. Saturday at Potsdam’s Roxy Theater. There will be an encore screening at 6:30 p.m. Sunday, April 13.

The opera will be performed in Italian, with English subtitles. The approximate running time is three hours, including two intermissions.

The 2013-14 season of the Met: Live in HD is sponsored in the north country by SUNY Potsdam’s Crane School of Music and J.S. Cinemas.

All productions will be shown live worldwide on Saturdays. There also will be encore presentations offered on Sundays locally. Doors open a half-hour before show time.

In the Met: Live in HD, robotic cameras, strategically placed around and behind the stage, capture the live performance. Intermission features and English subtitles bring the stories to life.

Ticket prices in Potsdam are the lowest available in the nation: $18 for an adult, $15 for senior citizens, $12 for students and $9 for ages 18 and under.
