RESTON, Va. - The St. Lawrence Thunder midgets edged Dallas Jr. Hockey 3-2 Saturday night and will play in the national championship game at 9:15 a.m. Sunday.
Dallas opened the scoring midway through the first period, but Chad Varney (Potsdam) made it a 1-1 game just 18 seconds later. Logan Ford and Kaden Pickering drew assists. Pickering enters the championship game with 13 points - 8 goals and 5 assists, just one point behind the tournament leader.
Kody Kocsis (St. Lawrence Central) gave the Thunder the lead at the 5 minute mark of the second period on a tally assisted by Lukas Arquiett and Hayden Hart. Arquiett (SLC) then had an unassisted goal at the 15:18 mark of the second period that proved to be the game winner.
Dallas scored a powerplay marker with just under 7 minutes remaining in the game but would get no closer.
Thunder goalie Jonathan Stone had 24 saves, and the Massena-based team fired 26 shots on the Dallas cage.
The Thunder will be playing Highland Park for the Tier II 16U national title. The teams have one common opponent in the national tournament.
Highland Park edged Tampa 3-2 Friday, and the Thunder downed Tampa 7-1.
