RESTON, Va. - The St. Lawrence Thunder rolled to a 7-1 victory over the Tampa Scorpions and will now skate in the Tier II 16U national tournament semi-finals against Dallas at 6 p.m. today.
The Dallas Jr. Hockey Association edged the Southern Stars 2-1 in this mornings other early quarterfinal matchup.
Tampa was the latest victim of a thunder storm when the Massena Minor Hockey sanctioned team broke open a 1-1 with three quick strikes in 94 seconds starting with just under 5 minutes to go in the opening period.
The Thunder then put the game out of reach with three more goals in the second period. The St. Lawrence Thunder went three for eight on the powerplay.
Kaden Pickering (N-N) continued his torrid pace in the tournament leading the Thunder with two goals, including a powerplay goal, and two assists on a morning when many of his teammates also had had multi-point outings.
Jordan Robert (Massena), Logan Ford (Potsdam) and Hayden Hart (Massena) each ginished the morning with a goal and an assist and Lukas Arquiett (SLC) dished out two assists.
Patrick Manning (Massena) also had a powerplay goal and Benjamin Sprague (Massena) added a solo marker for the Thunder and Chad Varney and Kyle Kocsis finished with an assist each.
Logan Brothers (Massena) had 31 saves for the win, and the Tampa goalies combined for 26 stops.
Dallas had entered its quarterfinal game with a 3-0 after victories over WEHL North Central (5-1), Channel Island Riptide (5-10 and Oakland Jr. Grizzlies (6-4).
The Southern Stars took a 2-1 mark into Saturday mornings actions opening pool play with a 6-4 loss to the Michigan Ice Hawks and then rebounding for victories over the South Boston Shamrocks (3-1) and the Arapahoe Warriors (7-6).
