Clarkson women’s lacrosse team falls to UofR; SLU edged RIT


POTSDAM — The Clarkson University women’s lacrosse team could not hold on to a slim first-half lead as the University of Rochester outscored the Golden Knights 5-0 over the final 30 minutes to gain an 8-4 road win in Liberty League play at Hantz Turf Field on Friday afternoon.

Clarkson, which dropped its third straight league game, hosts conference rival RIT on Saturday in a 3 p.m. contest. The Knights stand at 3-6 overall.

Sophomore Christine Wright (Watertown), who was one of four goal scorers for Clarkson, opened the scoring eight minutes in, but Rochester (5-2, 1-1), answered back with three straight goals to hold a 3-1 lead with 13:26 remaining in the half. The Green and Gold finished the period strong with a three-goal run of their own to take a 4-3 lead at the break. Freshman Paige Fayette (Theresa), junior Abby Doyle (Syracuse) and freshman Ashley Flick (Watertown) netted the late first-half goals for the Knights.

The Yellowjackets Mara Karpp scored the first of her two second-half goals just over two minutes after the break to start the visitors on their second-half surge.

Karpp and Danielle Diacovo paced the Rochester attacked with two goals each.

The Yellowjackets outshot the Knights 21-14 and also controlled ground balls by the same margin. Clarkson, led by sophomore Meaghan McKenna (Buffalo), held an 8-6 advantage in draw controls. Junior Cassie Grace (Potsdam) recorded a team-high three ground balls for the Knights.

Senior Kara DiNatale (Auburn) made five saves on 12 shots through 57 minutes in the Clarkson goal. Sophomore Dani Tani (Heuvelton) played the final minutes in goal for the Knights and caused one turnover and picked up a ground ball.

Marissa Traina made six saves in the Rochester goal.


In Canton, Carly VanTassel and Chloe Knapp scored late goals to lead the St. Lawrence University women’s lacrosse team to an 11-9 win over the Rochester Institute of Technology in a Liberty League game Friday afternoon.

The Saints (3-5 overall, 1-2 division) snapped a 9-9 tie with a goal from VanTassel with 2 minutes, 15 seconds remaining. Knapp extended the lead to two goals with a score with 1:26 left.

Knapp and VanTassel both finished with three goals. Caroline Bailey scored twice and Kiera Taussiq, Michaela Maybee and Abigail Owens added single goals for SLU.

Sage Sarkis led RIT (4-4, 1-1) with five goals. Corinna Mandell added three goals.


Chris Jones went 2-for-3 and drove in two runs to lead the Kangaroos (7-11) past Briarcliffe 4-3 in the opening game of a nonconference doubleheader in Bethpage.

Kevin Hill also went 2-for-3 for SUNY Canton. Briarcliffe won game two 9-3 but no other information was provided.



Mackenzie Bresett and Taylor Smith each scored three goals to lead the Blue Devils past Salmon River in the Northern Athletic Conference girls opener for both teams at SUNY Canton.

Carly Garrison and Sky Hoover both scored twice for OFA and Hunter Shaver also scored for the Blue Devils. Morgan Thompson led Salmon River with two goals and Chrissey Benedeict and Kyra Thompson-Douglas scored single goals.
