POTSDAM - The Kiwanis Club of Potsdam for many years has supported a reading program for local Head Starts. The club members volunteer time to go to the Potsdam and Parishville Head Starts to read books selected by Sarah Sachs, the Potsdam Public Library children’s librarian.

The Kiwanis Club finds sponsor businesses to help them buy a copy of each book read for each child in both programs. The child is just asked to take the book home and read it again with his/her parents. “It is so rewarding to see the interest these kids have when you read to them,” remarked Kiwanis member Nancy Walters.

The Potsdam Kiwanis wishes to thank SeaComm Federal Credit Union in Potsdam for once again supporting this effort. “They have continually shown their support,” Kiwanis Club Secretary Carla Ingram said, “and this year SeaComm employees also volunteered to read at the Potsdam Head Start.”

SeaComm’s humble roots began in 1963 in Massena and the Potsdam branch office was established in 1985. Today SeaComm Federal Credit Union serves over 40,000 members with assets in excess of $460 million and is open to anyone who lives, works, worships or attends school in St. Lawrence or Northern Franklin counties. Fidelis representative Brittany Matice, will be accompany Kiwanis Club President, Marylee Ballou, to one of the final readings of the year.

The Potsdam Kiwanis Club was chartered in 1989 and will celebrate its 25th anniversary this August. The club is part of the NYS St. Lawrence Kiwanis district which in turn is all a part of Kiwanis International. Kiwanis International is a global organization of members dedicated to serving the children of the world. Kiwanis and its family of clubs—nearly 600,000 members strong in nearly 80 countries—annually raise more than US$100 million and dedicate more than 18 million volunteer hours to strengthen communities and serve children. Members of every age attend regular meetings, experience fellowship, raise funds for various causes and participate in service projects that help their communities.
