FORT DRUM A song inspired by fallen Fort Drum soldier and Medal of Honor recipient Sgt. 1st Class Jared C. Monti won song of the year at Sundays Academy of Country Music Awards.
The song I Drive Your Truck, performed by Lee Brice, also was nominated for Single Record of the Year and Video of the Year.
It was written by Connie Harrington and her two writing partners after hearing Sgt. Montis father, Paul, talk about his son on a National Public Radio program. Mr. Monti has driven his sons Dodge Ram truck since his death, including driving it to the post for a memorial service honoring soldiers who died in 2012.
Sgt. Monti was a member of the 3rd Squadron, 71st Cavalry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division. He was leading a 16-man reconnaissance patrol in Nuristan Province, Afghanistan, in June 2006 when they were attacked. He moved the patrol into a defensive position, returned fire and called for indirect fire support before being mortally wounded attempting to save a fellow soldier.
In November, the song was chosen as Song of the Year at the Country Music Association Awards.
