WATERTOWN — Con artists claiming to be representatives of National Grid are scamming residents into paying fraudulent electric bills over the phone, city police said.

Police said the victims are contacted by phone and advised that their power will be shut off unless they purchase prepaid credit cards to pay the bill via telephone.

Police said that National Grid will not collect on bills in this manner and that any such instance is an attempt to steal money.

To report a scam attempt, call city police at 786-2610 or National Grid at 800-642-4272.
