Purple Heart Day is Aug. 7. Purple Heart recipients honorably discharged are recognized among cities, counties and villages across the country. This is the oldest military award, associated with Gen. George Washington during the Revolutionary War and is highly regarded within the military.

Watertown and Jefferson County should participate with Fort Drum. We should encourage officials; contact state Sen. Patty Ritchie and U.S. Rep. Bill Owen’s office for their input.

The Military Order of the Purple Heart has a chapter at Fort Drum, and the Syracuse chapter can be reached at 315-425-4685. Let’s reflect on the sacrifices of our military.
